ROLES OF THE READER IN ACADEMIC & BUSINESS SETTINGS

ACADEMIC
BUSINESS
Teaching. Learning.
Knows the "right" answer so often "knows what you mean" even if your writing is not clear. Does not know the "right" answer so probably does not "know what you mean" if your writing is not clear.
Wants to see you use new vocabulary, concepts, organizational patterns. Wants to understand your accurate information without effort.
Expects deadlines to be met but will often award partial credit if they are not met. Expects to be served promptly and courteously;  does not expect excuses
Usually discourages collaboration. Does not care how the information was obtained.
Must read document. May not finish reading the document.

ROLES OF THE WRITER IN ACADEMIC & BUSINESS SETTINGS

Learning. Teaching.
Not conveying information. Conveying information.
Expected to show knowledge of vocabulary, concepts, organizational patterns. Expected to be accurate and clear.
Partial credit possible. Accuracy crucial; no "credit" for almost!
Topic often from personal experience or literature and involves choice. Topic dictated by client, customer, or supervisor and seldom involves choice.
Deadlines imposed by another, often arbitrarily. Some deadlines, flexible or self-imposed; other completely flexible.
Length of writing assigned. No length of writing provided.
Type of organization sometimes assigned. Type of organization seldom assigned.
Collaboration usually discouraged. Collaboration permitted, sometimes encouraged.
