How to Develop a Pre/Post Test
  1. Define the focus of the lesson being taught.
  2. Determine what key ideas/concepts are being taught by the presenter.
  3. Brainstorm 10-15 possible questions that would effectively test the student’s knowledge prior to the lesson and after the concepts have been presented.
  4. Select a variety of five questions (multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, etc.) that will peak the students interest in excelling on the pre/post test and learning the material being taught.
  5. Type the five questions on an 8.5 x 11 page, taking note of the spacing and organization of the page. Include an area for designation of whether it is the pre or post test and for the student’s name. You may add optional graphics that relate to the focus of the lesson. (Please note: Do not photocopy the pre/post tests on both sides of the page to ensure result accuracy).
  6. Photocopy the pre/post tests (one of each for every student in the class being taught). Administer the tests before and after the lesson has been taught. Grade the pre/post test and calculate the percentage increase in knowledge.

SUCCESS!!!! You have now created a pre and post test!!

How to Calculate Perecent Increase in Knowledge
  1. Make sure you have the legitimate answer key.
  2. Count and be sure that you have an equal number of pre/post-tests.
  3. Grade all of the tests. We prefer if you mark the missed questions with an X and simply leave the questions answered correctly alone. Put the number missed at the top of the page. Example: -3
  4. Multiply the total number of students by the number of questions on the test (usually 5) Example: 50 Students X 5 Questions = 250 possible questions
  5. Add the total number missed for all the pre-tests. Example: -50
  6. Subtract that number from your total listed in Step 4. Example: 250-50=200
  7. Divide the number correct by the total number possible. Example: 200/250 = 80% (This is an unusually high score for a pre-test)
  8. Repeat steps 5-7 for the post-tests. Example: 250-10=240 240/250 = 96%
  9. Compute the increase in knowledge with the following formula:
    (Post - Pre)/Pre = % increase in knowledge
    Example: (.96-.80)/.80 = .20 or 20%
