What is SIFE?
Students In Free Enterprise

What is SIFE About?
SIFE is a not-for-profit organization supported by individuals, foundations, and corporations whose mission is to build collegiate SIFE teams who teach free enterprise in order to better individuals, communities, and countries.

Who can join SIFE?
The SIFE handbook states: "Any person officially enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate student at a college or university, whether full or part-time, is eligible to participate in SIFE. Students who attend classes on more than one campus, or students enrolled in both a two and four-year program at the same time, may participate on more than one team but are only permitted to represent one team at competition."

Who establishes the restrictions and qualifications for membership?
Each individual SIFE Team has complete authority to establish restrictions or qualifications for membership beyond those outlined by SIFE National Headquarters. To be recognized as an official SIFE student participant by SIFE World Headquarters, students must register themselves online at www.sife.org. Registration provides students with a membership packet, their own online account and access to the career services section of the SIFE website.

What kinds of companies sponsor SIFE?
All types of companies sponsor SIFE. The companies encompass the broad range of nearly every business sector. In fact there are over 200 companies on the Board of Directors.

What is a project?Any activity-either entrepreneurial or educational-which explains, promotes, or demonstrates capitalism and free enterprise according to these key areas:

  • Free markets in a global economy
  • Identifying a market need and profitably producing and marketing a product/service to fill that need
  • Entrepreneurial, communications, technological, and financial management skills
  • Ethical and socially responsible behavior

Do I have to create new projects on my own?
No.  SIFE has many continuous projects that are done each year. However, we always welcome and encourage new projects.

Where can I find old projects?
SIFE/AAF Room, DH 221. If you have any questions, ask Mrs. West or any officer.

How much time does SIFE require per week?
Two and a half hours class time. As in any organization, as projects are in progress, more time is necessary. Flexible scheduling is a benefit of SIFE.

Do I have to be enrolled in class to participate?
No.  In order to receive college credit, you must be enrolled, but extra curricular members are also encouraged, as well as non-business majors.

Is attendance mandatory?
Any student enrolled in the course is required to attend. Attendance is important, but if you cannot attend, you need to e-mail the SIFE secretary and give an explanation. Attendance is a portion of the grade.

How are projects evaluated?

  • Creativity/Innovation
  • Clarity of project objectives
  • Professionalism
  • Cost efficiency
  • Organization of project

Do we have to do projects individually or can we do them in groups?
Both are great, but we encourage self-development and leadership. Each group will have a leader and we wish to see individual initiative. Projects must be done individually for credit while incorporating the opinions and ideas of other members.

Can the course count towards my business degree plan?
The course can be used as both an upper-division business elective and a writing intensive course.

How can one earn an "A" in this class?
By being a leader and completing four projects as well as by helping on one or more (preferably more) projects, and receiving a media hit.
