Beta Gamma Sigma |
 |
|
| On behalf of the members of the Texas State University-San Marcos chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, we welcome you to this site and invite you to discover the many benefits of Beta Gamma Sigma membership. |
| In April 1997, the McCoy College of Business Administration at Texas State was awarded accreditation by AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. This accreditation opened the doors to Beta Gamma Sigma, the preeminent honor society for business programs accredited by AACSB International, and the Texas State BGS chapter was established in November 1997. |
| Only those students who meet rigorous standards of academic achievement are inducted into the organization. We challenge every student in the McCoy College to strive to meet these high standards and join us as members of Beta Gamma Sigma! |

| History |
| In the spring of 1907, a group of commerce students at the University of Wisconsin received permission from the faculty to organize a commerce honor society, which they proposed to name Beta Gamma Sigma. The purpose of the society was to encourage and reward scholarship and achievement in the field of business studies among commerce students at the university. During the same time period, students at the University of Illinois and the University of California recognized the need for such an organization on their own campuses and respectively organized Kappa Delta Chi and the Economics Club. In 1913, having become aware of their coexistence and common purpose, representatives of the three societies met in Madison, Wisconsin to consummate a merger which made Beta Gamma Sigma into a national organization. |
| Today, Beta Gamma Sigma is an international organization with 468 collegiate chapters in all 50 U.S. states and 16 countries, 19 alumni chapters, and well over 580,000 members living around the world. |
| The Invitation to Membership |
| Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest scholastic recognition a student can receive in an undergraduate or master's program in business or management. To be eligible for membership, a student must rank in the upper 10 percent of their junior or senior class, or upper 20 percent of their master's class. Class standing is based on Texas State GPA. Additionally, prospective members must have completed at least 30 hours at Texas State, 15 hours of which must be upper level classes in the McCoy College of Business Administration. |
| The Beta Gamma Sigma tapping ceremony is held three times a year during one full class week. This unique invitation to membership generates awareness about Beta Gamma Sigma within the student body at large. |
| Dr. Kay Nicols, Texas State BGS chapter faculty advisor, extends the membership invitation to eligible students during the tapping ceremony, accompanied by faculty representatives who are also Beta Gamma Sigma members. Students who accept the invitation to membership are inducted at a formal ceremony and reception in either the spring or the fall semester. |
