The Texas State Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team returned to San Marcos, Texas as winners after participating in the Dallas, Texas SIFE USA Regional Competition on April 3rd, 2009.  The event was one of 16 SIFE USA Regional Competitions being held across the United States in March and April.  A live 24 minute audio-visual presentation outlining each program’s results determines the winners.
In addition to winning the regional competition in their league for the twelfth straight year, Texas State also took home top honors by being named a top 20 finalist for five of the seven content-based Individual Topic Competitions, including:  Entrepreneurship Competition; HSBC Financial Literacy Competition; Waste Management Environmental Sustainability Competition; Campbell’s/Sealed Air Business Ethics Competition; and GE Consumer and Industrial Program Sustainability Competition.
Each league at the regional competitions chooses either one or two winners, depending on the number of universities in each league, to attend the national competition, with approximately 150 teams advancing to the national event May 10-13 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  The University of Texas - Tyler also qualified for the national competition in the same league as Texas State University-San Marcos.
SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on more than 1,400 university campuses in 48 countries.  SIFE teams’ projects address a variety of topics, such as market economics, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, personal success skills, environmental sustainability and business ethics.  Rather than mandating a uniform set of projects, teams are encouraged to work within the framework of these topics while adapting their approach to the diverse needs of people in different communities.  The result is a program that is global in scope and purpose with the flexibility and responsiveness of a community-based organization.
SIFE provides university students with the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to their communities while also discovering their potential to achieve an even greater impact as the business leaders of tomorrow.  It is this balance between immediacy of results and the continual development of effective, responsible leaders that has made SIFE a successful organization globally.
The captain of the Texas State presentation team, Brittany Fiedler, who led the team to a
“Final Four” finish in 2008, had this to say, “We were happy to present the results of our projects for the year and were overwhelmed with the judges’ responses.”  Presentation team members include:  Brittany Fiedler, Captain; Michael Huddleston; Rian Beaudoin; Lauren Peterson; Ben Campbell; and Brett Georgulis.  Technical team members were:  J.J. Jones, Executive Committee, Andrew Clancy, Vice-President of Free Enterprise City; and Brittany Feachen, Senior Vice-President, Free Enterprise City.  President Rian Beaudoin added, “SIFE has taught me a great deal about leadership, motivation and working very hard toward a common goal… our 142 member team helps to spread the message of free enterprise around the world.”
